As an artist I frequently explore both the commercial aspects of the skill as well as a fine art based exploration of photography.
Most of my photographic practice is tradition based black and white imagery, as illustrated through the majority of my Fine Art Photography gallery.
Throughout the few years I have been practicing the art, I have constantly related back to a quote from a published text by
Susan Sontag:

“Nobody exclaims “Isn’t that thing ugly! I must take a photograph of it!”

Even if someone did say that, all it would mean is “ I find that ugly thing … beautiful.” (On Photography: 85)

To me this identifies with notions of photography capturing the unexpected and enabling readers to read into an image of the typically “ugly” everyday scenario and find an aesthetic beauty, intrigue and visual interest.

In regards to my more commercial based imagery, I ensure that full communication with clients results in photographic images that I not only have free ability to dictate stylistic approach, I can create these works to a standard and style that will suit the needs of the company I am working with.

Photographic Work Experience

Commissioned Photography

During my time at university I have used time when not in lectures to further develop my own skills in photography by working freelance for various companies. The companies have included a range of product work for food and drink based business, as well as more complex studio work for models and body painters.
This, like the experience of working for Derby Evening Telegraph, has helped me adopt a professional approach to my photography, understand it from a business viewpoint and prepare me to work within a variety of contexts. All of these positions demanded that I be fluent with technical skills and confident with my approach to the subject as re-shooting was not possible.
Projects include:

Shakin’ it:
I was hired by this local company to take photographic images of their products both for promotional purposes, such as advertising boards in store, and to publicise a 10% reduction for students with a B-line Card, this was published in the Derbyshire County Council magazine and was freely distributed through schools and colleges across Derbyshire.

Derby Face and Body Painting:

This role entailed being creative, yet also very technical to enhance the desired qualities of the paint detail, requiring correct studio lights and camera settings to emphasise the detail and skill involved in the body designs, whilst maintaining professional standards of work and directing models confidently but politely to give the best result for the client. The images also involved knowledge of artistically pleasing aesthetics as the photographs were used in online promotion of the art.
Event Photography:

Advertised predominantly by word of mouth I have been hired as the photographer for personal events such as weddings and christenings. Capturing moments the client wishes to remember forever, it is vital to stay alert and aware of people and surroundings at all to times to ensure the employee gets everything they expected when hiring a professional.

As an artist I find presentation and quality a necessity and use this compulsion when presenting work to clients, making sure contact sheet and prints are supported by digital format and the package contains a congratulations letter and contact details, to add a personal but professional touch to any work.

Derby Evening Telegraph, Freelance photographer

This position involved dedication as it was fast paced with long hours, often working from 7.30am – 7.30 pm, and travelling throughout various parts of the UK, working for the Baby Of The Year competition. During the day it is vital to stay confident, polite and professional. As it is dealing with children and their families, it required me to be a strong communicator and to give information to parents quickly and as clearly as possible.

The role also demanded that I be active and alert at all times to entertain children and babies aged naught to three years, whilst constantly being aware of the importance of photographic qualities, to ensure an image that parents are willing to purchase. It was also important to have knowledge of health and safety aspects.

Interests and Personal Profile:

I am a highly motivated, enthusiastic and inspired individual, who is quick to pick up anything new. I consider myself to be both creative and practical, and am able to work alone, or as part of a team, easily adapting to the role that is required of me.

I enjoy listening to music and going to live events. I have interests in various aspects of art and design, in particular photography and visual imagery. I enjoy visiting art galleries and I have an interest in fashion. I also enjoy wildlife and landscape photography and use this passion to extend my personal portfolio.
